Mount St. Mary’s students torn over Good Friday

EMMITSBURG – Her Catholic parents generally keep days like Good Friday solemn by shunning technology, and if that holds true tonight, Mount St. Mary’s University senior Maria Parker will find herself in a predicament.

Should she sneak off to watch her school attempt to topple top-ranked and No. 1-seeded North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, a feat that would be one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history? Or does she stay firm to the reasons Mount St. Mary’s closed its doors and sent students away from campus for three school days — to reflect on the Easter season and spend time with family?

Mount St. Mary’s is the nation’s second-oldest Catholic university. The Newman Guide, which recommends the top Catholic schools, rates Mount St. Mary’s among the top 21 universities nationwide in upholding the religion’s identity, an accolade school administrators cherish.

Roy Hibbert went over and around undersized UMBC all day, finishing with 13 points and leading the second-seeded Hoyas past the 15th-seeded Retrievers.

Jonathan Wallace added 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and Austin Freeman finished with 11 for the Hoyas (28-5), who shot 51 percent and held UMBC scoreless for a 7-minute stretch.

Darryl Proctor scored 16 points and Brian Hodges added 11 for America East champion UMBC (24-9).

Patrick Ewing Jr. added 10 points for the Hoyas.

The #9 Arkansas Razorbacks quickly erased the disappointment of losing the SEC championship game by blowing past the #8 Indiana Hoosiers 86-72 in the first round of the NCAA tournament at the RBC Center.

Arkansas held a seven point lead at halftime and continued to build on their advantage in the second half. The Razorbacks were led by Sonny Weems who scored 31 points and Darian Townes who finished with a double-double scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

1. North Carolina vs 9. Arkansas

First Round Review

Mount St Mary’s wanted to run with North Carolina and the Tar Heels licked their chops; UNC cruised to a 1st round win. Arkansas kept Indiana at arms length after about 10 minutes of back and forth. Swingman Sonny Weems had 31 points in dispatching the Hoosiers.

For Arkansas to Win:
They have to play their best game of the year. They need a shooting performance like they had against Indiana on Friday (54% FG, 47% 3PT, 79% FT). Defensively, they have to keep Hansbrough off the boards as much as possible.

For North Carolina to Win:
Keep doing what you do. Feed Hansbrough the ball inside. Push the ball on defensive stops. Use your superb depth.

I like North Carolina in this game. It is essentially a home game for them and Ty Lawson is finally back 100% and in the flow of the offense.

We get the first ACC-SEC match up of the Tournament and this one looks to be in the ACC’s favor.
